Description

The Development DBA will be responsible for working within a development team to implement and optimise the underlying databases. The position provides technical expertise in the analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance of an existing high-volume, data intensive system.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Participate in IT project throughout the complete life cycle for the development of IT application services
  • Design and drafts technical specifications of database systems in line with the functional and non functional requirements.
  • Develops database solutions in line with the technical specifications
  • Monitoring and performance tuning of the database systems used for test and development, to ensure secure services with minimum downtime and is responsible for problem escalation to Oracle and third parties, as appropriate.
  • Performs technical testing and prepares the relevant technical documentation.
  • Supports end- users during acceptance tests and operational teams during migration to the production environment.
  • Investigate, diagnose and resolve bugs and incidents in the post-go live support of operations.
  • Develop appropriate scripts and procedures for the databases
  • Review and implement security policies to the databases, ensuring data consistency and integrity
  • Develop a working knowledge of business processes implemented in the databases
  • Provide training to 1st and 2nd level support staff with new procedures and techniques
  • Performing database patching, upgrade and migration as necessary;
  • Analysing performance issues and providing recommendation based on testing results;
  • Diagnosing and resolving problems affecting database;
  • Maintaining database configurations in compliance with release management and change management.

 Education and qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Physics;
  • Oracle Certified Professional certificate (OCP) would be an advantage.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Excellent knowledge and experience of Oracle 10g and 11g or above including related products (eg Grid Control).
  • Proven experience in system engineering, design and support, administering and maintaining mission-critical production databases including problem solving, performance tuning and capacity planning
  • Install and configure Oracle databases
  • Exposure to high data volume environment (TB)
  • Data model analysis
  • Good knowledge of PL/SQL and Unix Shell Scripting.
  • Good knowledge in writing complex SQL statements and tuning existing SQL statements for performance and scalability
  • Good knowledge of Business Objects, WebLogic and/or Tomcat would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Sun Solaris, Linux, current PC technology and Client Server architecture would be an advantage
  • Good analytical skills and a problem-solving orientation
  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation and the ability to work in a team are very important.
  • Very good command of English with proven drafting ability

Additional details regarding knowledge and skills

  • Experience in Datamodelling on the basis of defined user requirements
  • Developing and then testing the software/solutions designed.
  • Writing documentation, providing instructions and technical support to software users
  • Experience in SAS products (optional)
