Unix Systems Administrator

Role Description

Due to our continued success, we are now hiring for an UNix Systems Administrator to join the Infrastructure Technology Services (ITS) practice. The ITS team are embarking on a series of initiatives to radically reduce and optimise client's existing estates.

Overview of Role and Responsibilities

  • Working on elevated incidents
  • Create/Modify/Manage CI details in ESL/CMDB
  • Perform incident trending, Create and work on Proactive problem records
  • Create a SOPs
  • Identify, create, implement and close CIPS and update on share portal
  • Manage and update team share portals
  • Participate on TAB/CAB meetings
  • General Administration tasks includes:
    • Installing and configuring Operating system in Break fix
    • Installing and configuration of Unix clusters
    • Installing and configuration of Hardware (c7000) enclosures (Break fix)
  • Advance troubleshooting includes:
    • Troubleshooting Unix cluster issues
    • Troubleshooting any incidents elevated by L2 team
    • Analyze and resolve Unix dump for any server hang/unexpected reboot issues
    • Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve Cluster issues using Cluster logs
    • Analyze, capture performance counters and resolve Performance issues on server
  • Actively involved in escalations:
    • Includes engaging all stake holders and communicate
    • Join Conference Bridge for SEV1/SEV2/RtOPs and resolve SEV issues
    • Involve and work with IBM/Oracle/RedHat/EMC teams to resolve RtOPs/SEV issues (if needed)
  • Plan and execute complex changes includes:
    • Upgrading Firmware/drivers of Blade Enclosure
    • Upgrading Firmware/Drivers of a HP/Dell/IBM server
    • Disk expansions on Systems drives
    • Any registry Changes on Servers
    • Plan and execute Out of band patches and critical Hotfixes
    • Preparing SDR and Presenting to Service Excellence and Accounts team
    • Reviewing Capacity Management Data and work on Proactive problem Management
    • Review Availability management metrics and Present to Accounts team
  • Automation:
    • Identify Manual tasks and automate those tasks in deliveries
  • Lead, organize, schedule and conduct requirement gathering discussions. Take responsibility for reviewing the requirements and having them signed off by all stake holders
  • Assist the program manager/program manager with envisioning, effort estimation, resource planning and risk management for projects
  • Assist the project manager with project planning and defining project tasks and activities
  • Work with the customer on defining architecture vision, architecture principles, strategic architectural objectives, and architectural constraints. Identify and address architectural challenges
  • Develop target architecture that helps meet the customer's business needs strategic architectural objectives
  • Create architectural work products including Architecture Definitions Document, Architecture Requirement Specifications and relevant artifacts. Lead, organize, schedule and conduct review of architectural work products with all stake holders and secure sign off for them
  • Perform technology trend analysis and understand the technology trends of the customer and the market.
  • Work with the customer on developing technology standards for the enterprise
  • Establish and articulate the advantages of keeping/bringing the customer's IT solutions to HP standards and identify the resulting project opportunities
  • Provide technical guidance/directions for and take ownership of all relevant projects within the program. Act as lead technical advisor for architecture, design, development, implementation, integration, compatibility and customization of all solutions
  • Work with integration engineers on designing and documenting best practice solutions ensuring predictability, reliability and quality of new solutions
  • Actively participate in peer reviews of solution packages including design and implementation deliverables

Experience/Personal Characteristics

  • Extensive knowledge on the latest editions and at least 2 earlier editions of the relevant Unix Server Operating Systems
  • Experience in one of the Blade Server technologies such as HP C7000 and IBM Blade Centers
  • Expert knowledge on Unix Installation, migration, upgrades, space management, troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Experience in scheduling and automating deployments in Unix based server infrastructures
  • Experience in Unix Scripting - Shell Script, Perl script
  • Expert knowledge on MCSG clusters with Unix Failover Clustering
  • Extensive knowledge on mission critical midrange server infrastructure and an in depth understanding of server hardware architecture and performance
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing Automation of monitoring, reporting and patching of Unix based Servers
  • Extensive experience in capacity planning for and consolidation of Unix based server infrastructures including virtualized environments
  • Experience in designing, planning and implementing of datacenter consolidation including networking requirements, server sizing, backup requirement, storage requirement and Load balancing
