Good afternoon,
for an experienced Platform / DevOps Engineer to support the implementation and operation of Renovate as a centralized service across approximately 7,000 GitLab repositories. The consultant will help establish scalable dependency management, automate software updates and support development teams in adopting common governance and security standards.
Project:
Start: ASAP
Duration: first contract by the end of the year (extension possible)
Capacity: Part-time/Full-time (50%-100%)
Remote and on-site Share: Primarily remote, occasional travel to the Ruhr Area
Project languages: English (Fluent)
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and operate Renovate as a central service within GitLab.
- Design and maintain shared Renovate configurations, package rules, and governance policies.
- Manage GitLab permissions, service accounts, access tokens, protected branches, and MR approval rules.
- Optimize GitLab CI/CD pipelines, runners, caching, and platform capacity.
- Develop automation solutions using GitLab REST APIs, Bash, and Python.
- Support onboarding of development teams and troubleshoot Renovate and CI/CD issues.
- Promote best practices in dependency management, software supply chain security, and DevOps automation.
Required Skills
- Strong experience with GitLab Administration and GitLab CI/CD.
- Hands-on expertise in Renovate Configuration and Renovate Self-Hosting.
- Experience with Docker, containers, and internal registries.
- Strong Bash or Python scripting skills.
- Experience working with GitLab REST APIs, curl, jq, and automation tooling.
- Understanding of package ecosystems such as npm, Maven, Gradle, NuGet, pip/Poetry, Docker, Helm, and Terraform.
- Knowledge of CI/CD optimization, rate limits, repository governance, and large-scale platform operations.
Nice- to-have Skills
- Kubernetes (Helm, CronJobs, Secrets, Persistent Volumes).
- Supply Chain Security and Secrets Management.
- Monitoring, Observability, and platform diagnostics.
- Terraform and Infrastructure as Code.
- GitLab Dependency Scanning.
- Experience delivering large-scale platform rollouts and supporting multiple engineering teams.
