About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Platform / DevOps Engineer to design, build, and operate a centrally managed, automated dependency management solution based on Renovate. The solution will scale across tens of thousands of GitLab repositories, delivering automated updates as merge requests and significantly reducing manual effort while improving security and compliance.
This is a greenfield project with high visibility and real impact – you will shape the architecture, implement the automation, and drive the rollout across the entire organization.
Your Responsibilities
Design and implement a self-hosted Renovate environment using containers, distributed workers, and job orchestration
Automate repository discovery and onboarding via the GitLab API
Develop central configuration presets with team-specific extension mechanisms
Set up monitoring, logging, alerting, and dashboards (coverage, throughput, error rates)
Optimize performance through parallelization, caching, and rate-limit handling
Integrate artifact registries and secure credential stores (e.g., Vault)
Create operational documentation, runbooks, and support development teams during phased rollout
Your Profile
Solid experience as a DevOps, Platform, or Automation Engineer
Very good knowledge of GitLab CI/CD and the GitLab API
Hands-on experience with containers, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., OpenTofu, Helm)
Good scripting and programming skills (Bash, Python, or JavaScript/TypeScript)
Experience with monitoring and observability stacks (e.g., New Relic)
Knowledge of secrets management (e.g., Vault) and package/container registries
Practical experience with Renovate is essential
Independent, structured working style with a strong automation-oriented mindset
Fluent in English (German is a plus but not required)
