Role objective

Improve an application’s image capture and processing capabilities, assess whether reliable analysis can be achieved without a photobooth, and validate performance across a wider range of smartphones beyond the currently supported smartphone model.

Key responsibilities
  • Assess the current image capture workflow and identify the factors that make the photobooth necessary.
  • Develop and evaluate methods to reduce reliance on the photobooth, addressing variations in lighting, shadows, reflections, camera angle, distance, focus, and image distortion.
  • Implement automated image quality checks and user guidance to help users capture suitable images and retake unsuitable ones.
  • Identify all the smartphone components that can have an impact on the application’s performance and safety.
  • Define minimum smartphone and camera requirements, including resolution, autofocus, operating system compatibility, and processing capacity.
  • Design a validation matrix covering different phone manufacturers, models, camera specifications, and operating conditions.
  • Build representative image datasets and test protocols to assess accuracy, repeatability, robustness, and processing time across devices.
  • Define acceptance criteria with microbiology and quality teams, and document supported devices, limitations, and recommended capture conditions.
Candidate profile
  • Experience in computer vision, image processing, and camera-based measurement.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and relevant libraries such as OpenCV; experience integrating algorithms into mobile applications.
  • Knowledge of camera calibration, perspective correction, illumination correction, segmentation, and image quality assessment.
  • Knowledge of smartphone camera hardware and imaging pipelines, including sensor and lens characteristics, autofocus, exposure control, white balance, HDR, image compression, and manufacturer-specific image processing that may affect measurement accuracy.
  • Experience designing reproducible experiments and validating performance across different devices.
  • Experience with medical imaging, diagnostic tools, or microbiology applications would be an advantage.
Expected deliverables
  • A feasibility assessment and prototype for image capture without a photobooth.
  • A documented smartphone compatibility test plan and validation report.
  • Evidence-based minimum device specifications and recommendations for broader deployment.

Languages:
  • Fluent English

Skills:
  • Strong writing and communication for documentation and multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Analytical thinking and research aptitude
  • Having knowledge and interest in the following topics is a plus (not mandatory): medical devices, humanitarian innovation, limited resource settings.
