Tasks:

The Pipeline Systems Group in the Directorate of Engineering (DoE) is developing the VLT and VLTI data reduction pipelines for the operational instruments at the La Silla and Paranal observatories. The data reduction pipelines are used in two operational environments, by the Data Flow Operations in Garching, and by the Paranal Science Operations (PSO), for the quick-look assessment of data, the health-monitoring of instruments and detectors, the generation of master calibration data, the reduction of scientific exposures, and data quality control. The work involves the preparation of data reduction procedures in the framework of the new High-Level Data Reduction Library (HDRL). The procedures and algorithms have to be implemented in ANSI-C and with the CPL library.

University degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

The ideal consultant is a software engineer with experience and sufficient expertise in developing scientific data processing applications in ANSI-C. The consultant is required to have sufficient expertise of processing and statistical handling of scientific data, including statistical error propagation. The consultant should have experience and sufficient expertise in development software in a Unix/Linux environment. He or she shall be able to participate in any of the maintenance and development efforts in support of our customers team, contributing to the entire software life cycle, from analysis to design, coding, documentation and testing, to deployment and maintenance. He or she shall be experienced with software development tools (version control, development environments, debuggers, profilers). He or she is required to have excellent command of the English language and very good oral and written communication skills. The consultant will also interact with scientists of other groups for the specification of data reduction procedures and - in collaboration with our customers team and the responsible of the activity - he or she shall be able to operate independently and meet the agreed deadlines.

nice-to-have:

Good knowledge of Python and Scripting languages;
Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation and observational techniques in astrophysics (imaging, adaptive optics, and spectroscopy) and related data reduction methods.
Experience in code validation and unit/regression testing.
Experience with multi-threaded programming will be an asset.
