Task:

The principle role of the Windows Server Engineer is to ensure the day to day running of all Windows servers within the company is maintained.
This role is likely to have a bias toward building and deploying servers to internal standards, in order to meet the needs of various projects and customers.
Experience of server performance analysis, particularly with a view to moving physical servers to virtual; or moving to more appropriately sized hardware, would be an advantage.

Skill:

Windows Server:

Monitor standard tools for failures in hardware or errors from the OS. (MOM/SIM/Tivoli)
Respond to calls/Incidents (HP Service Centre)
Schedule Changes in line with appropriate regulations and agreed downtime
Upgrades to existing servers at request of application team, or following troubleshooting.
Experience with HP and Dell server hardware.
Consult with customers, specify and procure appropriate hardware to satisfy new requirements or upgrades taking a broad view of factors into account including cost, performance, virtual options and global standards.
Be able to work within a team sharing responsibility for 24x7x365 cover; this will incorporate covering shifts within the 07:00 to 19:00 working day, 'On-Call' 24x7, Weekend Work and Emergency Work when required.
Provide appropriate support to Data Centre Managers when they request downtime for hardware restacks, DC maintenance, etc, or for similar requirements from elsewhere within Infrastructure.
Analyse Server Performance and identify issues requiring reconfiguration or hardware upgrade.
Coordinate changes to SAN storage configuration to ensure smooth transition and to minimise the risk to the application/business.
Support the DMZ environment from a Windows Server perspective.
Maintain appropriate OS patching level on all Windows servers using various tools, including automated deployment systems.
Ensure that servers are running the latest AV software and definition files.
Perform Early Morning, Midday and Close of Day Checks to ensure the Windows server environment is at a known good state and is being actively monitored.
Be able to build / rebuild / restore a server to the specified company standard.

Soft Skill of Candidate:

The role requires an engineer with strong communication skills and a positive attitude.
They need to be customer facing (to the Application/Development IT teams) and be delivery focused as well as technically strong in Windows technologies. Importantly, they need to be sociable and communicative so as to fit in with a dynamic and diverse team locally and globally.
They also need to be able to work well under pressure and will be expected to put in extra effort to ensure in-time delivery of key projects on occasion.

Additional skills:

Extensive working knowledge of Windows Server Operating systems including build, configuration, performance tuning and troubleshooting up to W2008 R2
Extensive knowledge of Windows server hardware specifically HP Proliant and Dell hardware, including hardware RAID configuration.
Strong Knowledge VMware ESX
Strong knowledge of HDS and/or EMC SAN connectivity (from the Windows side)
Strong knowledge of IP network connectivity and configuration, DNS, WINS, etc
Knowledge of Active Directory
Knowledge of IIS 6/7.5
Knowledge Powershell
Knowledge of Windows 2008 R2 core edition
Desirable: Windows 2012 experience
Desirable: knowledge of BMC Bladelogic deployment tools
Desirable knowledge and IB experience of IIS technology, architecture and configuration in conjunction with hardware load balancers
