Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding Real Time environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures.

The role will embrace:

  • Analysis, specification, planning and implementation of network upgrades and evolutions
  • Technical documentation (eg design specifications, maintenance procedures, engineering change requests, anomaly reports, user guides)
  • Implementation and maintenance of a campus MPLS/VRF backbone network
  • Installation and configuration of Routers, Switches, Firewalls and multiplexers
  • Monitoring network and comms link status and performance, and investigating network anomalies
  • Ensuring that after failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, performance of associated recovery procedures
  • Tuning operating parameters to optimise performance
  • Analysing problems with WAN links and services
  • Implementation and monitoring of security measures at the network level
  • Using collected statistics to support proposals for network modifications
  • Implementation and maintenance of repositories for allocated IP addresses, and switch port allocations
  • Liaising with internal and external providers of network services for anomaly resolution, scheduling maintenance and planning changes

The key experience and attributes sought are:-

  • Experience of specifying, planning and preparing network engineering activities
  • Ability to analyse complex systems and to present them in a comprehensible way, with the specific ability to understand relevant details while keeping the focus on the overall system aspects
  • Demonstrated capability to prepare the documents listed in the tasks above
  • Cisco network technology, architectures and equipment
  • Campus Backbone network architectures (eg MPLS VPN). Network QOS techniques and solutions
  • High availability network techniques and protocols, routing protocols eg HSRP, VSS, OSPF, BGP, RIP
  • Data center network architecture
  • Service provider WAN interfacing: using MPLS, SDH, Ethernet-based, E1/E3, ISDN, leased line services
  • Experience of 24/7 high-availability operational environments
  • Interaction with product and service suppliers in support of procurement activities
  • Solaris, Linux, AIX, Microsoft Windows operating systems
  • Configuration and monitoring of network protocols and applications, eg DNS, SNMP, FTP, NTP
  • MS Office and Visio.

Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous:

  • Network security solutions and architectures - Cisco security equipment, ASA, FWSM, IPSEC VPN, TACACS+
  • Access control and authentication solutions
  • Network virtualisation architectures and solutions
  • Network management and monitoring techniques and tools such as JFF, Nagios, Cisco Works, RMON, SNMP
  • IP multicast and multicast related protocols and standards (eg PGM)
  • Network time systems: GPS receivers, NTP Servers
  • Protocol analysers
  • Tools - Snort, wireshark, tcpdump, iptables, cricket, iperf
  • Monitoring and supervision of external service provider performance, knowledge of service management and SLAs

Candidates must possess a University degree or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 3 years starting in July 2012 with two options to extend for further periods of one year each.
