This position, based near Frankfurt in Germany, calls for skills in administration of Unix systems and Oracle - though it is not a standard Oracle DBA position.
Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding Real Time environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures.
The role will embrace:-
- Installation and configuration of operating system and other software and tuning operating system parameters to optimise performance
- Analysis, planning and performance of hardware and software upgrades
- Monitoring system performance and correction of hardware and system software problems
- Definition, maintenance and performance of backup procedures
- Liaison with external providers of hardware and system software maintenance
- Administration and installation of databases
- Administration of user accounts
- Support to software development and maintenance in relation to utilisation of system resources
- Implementation and maintenance of scripts and procedures for the automated execution of the above activities
- Generation of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades
The key experience and attributes sought are:-
- Significant experience of UNIX systems administration
- Experience of the installation and administration of Oracle Databases
- Know-how with Solaris, RedHat and Suse Linux
- TCP/IP internetworking and related protocols and applications, eg NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP
- High availability software such as Sun Cluster, IBM HACMP or Veritas Cluster
- Good system design skills
- An understanding of incident and problem management
- Technical documentation skills
Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous:-
- IBM Pseries computers running AIX
- RAID arrays especially ones based on EMC technology
- SAN technology, especially Brocade
- Backup and recovery systems
- Knowledge of Windows
- Basic hardware support, eg installing interface cards and establishing networks
Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 3 years starting in September 2012 with two options to extend for further periods of one year each.
