This position, based near Frankfurt in Germany, calls for at least five years experience of data centre, computer room or operations room infrastructure.
Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding Real Time environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures.
This role is linked to the launch of a new satellite programme and will embrace:-
Definition of requirement specifications covering computer/operations rooms and storage network infrastructure
Definition of parameters such as square metres, power, cooling capacity etc
Contributing to the definition of layouts in the operations rooms
Performing the physical installation of eg cables, interface panels, racks, network devices and furniture
Maintenance of installation documentation, including layout diagrams, infrastructure interface control documents, cabling database, network diagrams etc
Evaluating compatibility of proposed and existing storage network infrastructures
Liaison with external suppliers of maintenance services
Support to system commissioning operations
The key experience and attributes sought are:-
Server/operations room layout design including efficient use of power and cooling
Inter-room and inter-building data connection techniques
Rack installation, cable laying and equipment installation and testing
Power distribution infrastructure
Technical drawing software packages eg Visio
Operation of backup and recovery solutions under NetBackup or equivalent
Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous:-
Enterprise environments with local and distributed networks (LANs and WANs)
Unix variants eg Linux, Solaris, AIX
Perl and PHP Scripting
Setting up and maintaining security systems at host, network, fabric and storage level (eg Firewalls, SSL, encryption)
Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential and a working knowledge of French advantageous. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 24 months starting as soon as is feasible with TWO options to extend for further periods of one year each.
